Maximizing the Lifespan of Artificial Turf

On average, artificial turf can last between 15 and 25 years.

No longer confined to just sports fields, artificial turf is gaining traction in residential homes. It’s clear to see why. It’s easy to maintain, doesn’t need excess water or chemicals, and can often look almost as good as natural grass. But like any product, artificial turf isn’t forever.

Here are some tips to keep artificial turf in good shape and long-lasting:

How long does artificial turf normally last?

On average, artificial turf can last between 15 and 25 years. However, this is a theoretical estimate, and the real lifespan will depend on foot traffic, UV exposure, maintenance, and how well it was installed.

Synthetic turf cleaning

Keep the grass clean to help it last a long time. Brush the turf to keep fibers upright and remove the debris that might weigh them down. Occasionally, rinse it with a hose to remove dust and minor stains or pet messes. The frequency of this cleaning depends on the climate. Since dry climates get less rain, the turf may need more frequent rinsing.

Foot traffic

The parts of the turf that get the most use will naturally wear out faster. If possible, rotate furniture across the areas so one area doesn’t wear out more than another. Also, create walkways or use stepping stones on the turf instead of walking directly on it.

Stains and spills

Think of artificial turf more like a carpet than grass. If something spills on it, there’s a chance of permanent stains. So, clean spills quickly. Most spills go away after rinsing with water. However, if there are any tough stains, use a mild detergent and rinse thoroughly. Some stains might even need professional cleaning.

UV damage

Quality synthetic grass is already UV-stabilized, but this might not always be enough. If the turf gets plenty of sun and, in turn, UV rays, use UV protectant sprays on it. Shades and awnings protect the grass from intense sunlight and UV exposure.

Pet issues

Pet messes can be harsh on artificial grass. Clean pet waste quickly to avoid stains and bad smells. There are specialized turf cleaners that effectively remove pet waste without much effort. Furthermore, the turf must drain properly, especially with pets, to prevent smells from building up and keep the area hygienic.

Repairs

Even if the turf has some damaged parts, it doesn’t mean its life cycle has ended, especially if the damage is small. Have them repaired quickly so they’re less likely to worsen. If the worn-out area is more prominent, partial replacement is also an option.

Invest in professional turf care

Professionals know best how to clean and repair artificial turf. They can install, maintain, and advise on best practices. So, if you are concerned about your turf’s lifespan, call the experts and let them assist you.
